Medical Laboratory Assistant
 Is this you? Organized, methodical, inquisitive and curious. If these are characteristics that describe you, and you are interested in a career in the medical field, you will want to take a close look at the Medical Office and Laboratory Assistant program.
In addition to learning the theory behind the procedures, the bulk of your education will come from hands-on experience in a well-equipped classroom/laboratory and right on site, at a hospital.
Technical skills, administrative skills, and interpersonal skills, you will use them all in your new career. Where might that career take you? Employment opportunities are quite extensive and can include: private diagnostic testing laboratories, public health and hospital laboratories, outpatient departments, and quality control laboratories in the fields of food, microbiology media, and point of care testing. You could also work in a veterinary laboratory, a physician's office or just about any other medical office environment.
In terms of certification in this field, British Columbia does not have provincial certification for Laboratory Assistants; however a certification agreement exists with Ontario. This means that as a graduate of the Medical Office and Laboratory Assistant program you could take the Laboratory Assistant's examination through the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists (OSMT). Successful completion of this exam entitles you to the designation of Medical Laboratory Assistant / Technician (MLA/T). *

* You must register and pay the examination fee to the OSMT. In addition, you may also apply to take the National Certification Agency Phlebotomy Exam, which is normally held in June. The NCA is an American certifying agency.
