The Personal Support Worker program will train you in all aspects of personal support for individuals experiencing the need for temporary or permanent assistance. You will be encouraged to become a facilitator in the healing process. You will learn to identify and respond to the physical and emotional needs of clients and your education will provide you with the skills to promote physical and mental activation. You will also learn the safe and proper handling of specialized equipment. Your key skills, however, will be evident in your ability to provide personal and physical care with compassion, empathy and respect for the individual.
Employment opportunities for Personal Support Workers are varied, and available on a part-time or full-time basis. Your work could take you to long-term care facilities, home health care agencies, retirement homes and residences, hospices, group homes.
To earn the designation of a certified Personal Support Worker (PSW), you must successfully complete a recognized program that meets or exceeds the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities standards and pass the required provincial exam.
